Best Whiskey Brands - Kentucky Bourbon

Kentucky is famous for its high quality bourbon. There are many renowned brands in the state.

This hub focuses on Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon which is one of the Best Whiskey Brands in Kentucky.

Located 1 hour East of Louisville, KY on the I-64E it is worth the drive to experience this spirit directly where it is distilled.

Road Trip

While on an ambitious road trip to Nashville from Toronto, ON our car became lost, when I directed us in the opposite direction from Cincinnati down the I-75 instead of the I-71. Little did we know at the time that those miss-directions would lead us to a wonderful discovery.

Once we had corrected our course we found ourselves travelling westbound on the I-64 and came across highway signs indicating that the Woodford Reserve Distillery was nearby. Just follow the well marked road signs or the Google map below.

Woodford Reserve Distillery

The Distillery

The distillery itself is in a very scenic area and the site is full of nice old limestone buildings. In fact it is one of the oldest and smallest working distilleries in Kentucky. The surrounding land is stereotypical Kentucky Bluegrass Horse Ranches and rolling hills.

The Bourbon

Tasting Notes:

  1. Color: Amber
  2. Nose: Strong, vanilla, oak
  3. Taste: Essence of tobacco, leather, fruits and Toffee
  4. Finish: Smooth and spicy

We purchased a special Kentucky Derby Edition of the bottle. It makes a great gift or collectors item.

The Tour

The distillery offers a variety of tours starting as low as $7 for a guided tour which asts about an hour. It includes a introductory video follwed by a walk through teh site to explore the facilities and an explanation of the entire process. The tour also includes a sample of the bourbon and a bourbon based chocolate treat.

Overall it was a very thorough and interesting tour though apparently there are more detailed tours available if booked in advance.

They included interesting facts such as the definition of Angels Share being the percentage of alcohol that evaporated during fermentation.
